One of my favorite anime, one of my favorite ova.. it gets a lot of points by just being a link between two parts of Darker Than Black (though second season lacks is worse than the first in a lot of fields – especially there is almost no Yin). And I still don’t get it, why it was aired later than second season, because it explains why second season even came into this world..
Anyway, without watching first season this OVA might be confusing.. But after seeing 1st season I just loved Yin and Hei, and as this ova goes it gives more credit to their relationship I just couldn’t not love it also.
So the basic. Hei is a contractor, who has an ability to shock with electricity, Yin is a doll – she can see what happens in other places trough water. They both are hunted by Syndicate (to see how that happens – see first season). Dolls usually don”t have feelings, but Yin manages to break that rule because of Hei (she falls in love with him.. more or less..). This ova shows the link how they get separated and why Hei starts to think that he is guilty of all this situation. For me this ova is one of the best romance-action play ever done with characters. All situation seems to be just not right for them as everything starts to fall out of hands and that is just right for the anime.. Though at times all the chase gets a bit too complicated, because eventually its not clear who is chasing who.. but that’s a minor detail.. But yet its sweet in its own way – as Hei tries to protect her, but eventually understands that maybe he needs to be protected from her (don’t take that word by word.. its just game of words). Cold (at least it seems so) and always right behavior of Yin, Hei’s growing believe in her, small details like “I will not leave you” or “don’t ever leave me” and tension not only between the ones who chase and their hunted, but also between main two characters grow. and all that hugging every time they meet – uhhh that’s just makes my heart beat faster and my blood pressure rise..
The ending is predictable and unpredictable at the same time – we know that they have to separate and that Yin has to be locked in some strange container, but on the same time we have no idea how that will happen. And yet I love that they actually put a little “happy ending” in it ass well. I love this ova despite the fact that second season was low. They added hair to Hei – which is cool, and made him alcoholic – which is lower than low. Paired him with some nervous girl (too much of sailor moon action in her transformation, as she was getting a gun out every time if you ask me) and with an annoying squirrel – well i guess nothing would be better than cat.. but a squirrel?..
