Main characters:

  • Shinji Ikari – the main guy, pilot of Eva Unit 01;
  • Rei Ayanami – girl with blue hair, pilot of Eva Unit 00;
  • Asuka Langley Soryu – girl with red hair, pilot of Eva Unit 02;
  • Misato Katsuragi – girl with violet hair, commander of Ikari;

That was disturbing image…

The beginning of this movie (the ep 24.) is the same as was shown in rebirth part of previous movie. Nerv is under attack and blood spreads everywhere.. While that happens Shinji is hiding as kid and Asuka wakes up and starts to kick everybody’s asses.. Rei on the other hand starts to be more scary and mysterious. She is somehow connected with Shinji.

But this movie is more concerned about Shinji and his emotional feelings (that are more sexual this time) towards Asuka and Misato. Misato gets hurt and then killed, but still rewords Shinji with the “kiss of adult” (and promises the rest when he comes back..). Though there are shown  lots of images of her “having fun” with other guy.

Shinhi becomes a bit nuts after he sees what other evas done to Asuka (well she lost in the end and was more or less eaten). So eventually he and his eva is used to put a third impact on Earth and unify all humanity (nothing unites better than death)..  And then Rei comes in really strange (and naked) form that start  to take over the world.

That brings all sorts of images to Shinji’s head. First is his childhood and that he was alone, while other kids went home with their mothers. Then also there are scenes with Asuka and Misato.

There is a scene where they fight and Asuka tells him not get close to her (ok that is understandable from her thoughts and the way she lives – she doesn’t want anyone close to her..), but Shinji accuses her of being distend and that she doesn’t allow him to know her..  eventually its clear that he wants to be with her, because she lets him to feel not alone… But she pushes him away.. and he gets mad, he feels afraid of being abandoned again.. (btw I noticed that the actual series of anime actually consists the scene with the coffee spilling on the floor.. just Asuka was not choked, she was arguing with Shinji about Kenji)

the reason Shinji feels down leads to the world destruction… but as Shinji wishes others to exist again everything stops and world doesn’t fall.. (well more or less..).

Everything ends in a same as it probably started:

Yes even when he already decided that others have to exist he still tries to kill her.. but as she shows a sign of affection he just starts to cry.. The last words of all anime is “Kimochi warui” which means something like I feel sick, though it can be interpreted in a lot of ways which all might be true. Originally it suppose to be something connected to morning sickness (which would mean Asuka is pregnant), other might be something like “you are disgusting” which would mean Asuka is disgusted by Shinji.. and so on.. Some good points are stated here by some people (best regards to all of them) of this interpretation matter.

Also I like one idea raised in this thread: world wasn’t destroyed, and all people just need to wish to get their shape back, and if they do they will get out of all that Sea of Life.. I could add – like Shinji did. He got out of the Sea and then just got back to shore.

After all I consider this anime as one of best psychological and analytical anime ever. It touches a lot of things happening in people minds, and one of the main “we do not want to be alone” in the end. We want to be recognized, we do not want to be abandoned by others, specially precious to us.  There is one phrase (I’m not sure who said it, so I’m sorry that I cant give a reference to author, but if I find, I will put it) “we are similar to God because we are the same alone” (ok translation is not the best.. but I guess you get the meaning).. All I want to say is that we are connecting to God through our loneliness, and people tend to play gods – that leads to distraction of everything…

there are just so much of everything about this movie, series and so on, that I will probably leave it at this point and just skip to some interesting pics..

very nicely done original art:

Picture has home (click to find)

Edit. Something I noticed while surfing internet – Rei is more or less one of the rulers there.. Though Asuka has big fan club, but I guess Rei is still above.

Shinji on the other hand is more or less blamed for what happened to the world, how he treated Asuka and so on.. (btw interesting post ^.^)  I agree that he was a wuss and because he did nothing Asuka was more or less eaten alive. His selfishness, which he showed in this movie, was a bit outrageous.. He was more interested in the fact that he feels alone than saving the world – that was probably the reason world was starting to fall apart.

Inner song:

With other voices

Ed: “Thanatos -If I Can’t Be Yours-” by Loren & Mash

(note that there is eng dub, and Asuka says “How disgusting”, in the version I watched. Japanese with eng subs, she said “I feel terrible” )
